I need an editor.

I have planted chestnuts in another area as rows on contour ( much wider spacing), so these are rows of just hazelnuts. To my mind, if we are to scale up perennial food crops to feed more than just the homesteader, they need to be arranged to make harvest somewhat efficient. My land is by no means a monoculture, but the block of hazels was laid out so that if some sort of mechanized harvest is developed, they would accommodate that.
https://www.midwesthazelnuts.org
this org is slowly heading in that direction.

I don't plan to run animals for windfalls, as there are very few after hand harvest. As things progress here, I might try grazing cows, but I don't know if they would eat the nuts off the ground. They would mostly be taking advantage of the grass between rows, saving me some mowing.

Chickens ar a good choice for running under hazels, but this planting is too far from the house, and predators, water would be a problem. Actually, the time period that windfalls would supplement feed is rather short, so not worth the trouble in my case.

The goldenrod is just a weed. I thought you were talking about involcres as a type of nut, but apparently its a description of a plant part. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Involucre
Are you growing anything else in with the nuts? Was the goldenrod intentional or just a weed? planning on running any animals underneath them to collect windfall?
Steve Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03684908419262242138noreply@blogger.com
